International Visitor Leadership Civil Rights and Community Leadership Program
The three-week IVLP Africa Regional Project from February 5 through February 23, 2007 entitled, "Civil Rights and Community Leadership," aimed to enhance the participants' understanding of the history and direction of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The program explored its impact on the African-American community and other minority groups and examined methods used to achieve social change. Participants looked at the public and private sectors, grassroots organizations, community leaders and educational institutions to address issues of tolerance and conflict resolution. Through an integrated series of meetings, site visits and discussions with their U.S. counterparts, the participants gained a thorough understanding of the progress of African Americans and other minority groups in the United States in achieving equality and social justice.
